Twinings - the story of the most famous tea producer

The history of drinking tea in England began back in 1662, thanks to Queen Catherine of Braganza (a region in Portugal), wife of King Charles II. She served tea to her aristocratic friends at the royal court and since then tea has become a fashionable drink.

The history of the Twinings family begins in 1684 when the family moved to London due to economic hardships. The family lived in Gloucestershire where they worked as weavers and millers, but due to the recession they moved to the city to start a new life. Thomas Twining was only 9 years old at the time, but he was already following in his father's footsteps and learning the weaving trade. Ambitious Thomas became a freeman in 1701 at the age of 26. The same year he renounced weaving and learned trading skills for a wealthy merchant who was engaged in ship imports of tea from China. Five years later, in 1706, he bought Tom's Coffee House on The Strand and thus began the most famous world tea brand.

The shop was located on the border of Westminster and City of London (where it is still located today) where wealthy aristocrats lived. At that time Coffee Houses were popular, and they gathered exclusively male members of society. The most consumed drinks were gin, beer and coffee.

Thomas Twining knew a lot about tea, but the popularity of that drink was not high at the time. Despite trends, he believed in the product and that faith paid off. With unusual promotions and new ideas, he attracted customers, and the tea itself became a fashionable drink for higher layers of society. The year 1784 is important because of the reduction in tea tax, making tea available to all layers of society.

The recognizable Twining logo was created by Richard Twining I. (Thomas's grandson) who in 1787 placed that coat of arms at the entrance of the store. The coat of arms consists of 1 lion and 2 Chinese. The lying lion is considered a sign of respect for the grandfather (the founder of the company) while the 2 Chinese represent trade with China. This logo is considered the oldest commercial logo in the world because it has not changed from its founding to this day.

One of the most important years in this company is 1837 when Queen Victoria granted the company the royal warrant ("Royal Warrant"). The warrant was only given to manufacturers who were responsible for supplying the royal household and represented a great honor for manufacturers.

Twining's tradition of producing and selling tea is over 300 years old, and today they are one of the world's tea producers.

In our market, teas are present in four categories, namely:

1) Infuso teas (Orange-cinnamon-mango, Chamomile-vanilla-honey, Ginger-lemon, Cranberry-raspberry, Roiboos-ginger-mint, Mint, Infuso collection)

Immerse yourself in a world full of colors and flavors with incredibly tasty and imaginative offers of fruit and herbal teas. Combining fruit and herb flavors is a simple way to feel good and hydrate with a tasty drink. All are sugar-free and with only 4 calories in each cup! They are made from 100% natural ingredients. They relax and rejuvenate, depending on the time of day, your mood and tea choice.

2) Green tea, Green tea with mint, Green tea with lemon, Green tea with cranberry

Drinking green tea is a great habit to start the day, with less caffeine than a cup of coffee and only about 2 calories per cup. Green tea comes from the plant (Camellia Sinensis) like any other type of tea, but it is treated differently to obtain the unique taste we know. Once the leaves are picked, they are allowed to oxidize for a shorter period compared to black tea, leaving the leaves light green. The taste of pure green tea is not for everyone and that is why Twinings decided to produce mixtures of green tea and fruit or mint. A small ritual of drinking your favorite tea can lift your mood and make you feel more alive, allowing you to get more out of your day.

3) Black tea (with woodland fruit flavor, with vanilla flavor, Prince of Wales, English Breakfast, Earl Grey)

Black teas have more caffeine than greens, but they also have a more pronounced taste and most people use them as a substitute for morning coffee. Prince of Wales is pure black tea from China, featuring a blend of light color, mild flavor and well-rounded character. It is excellent for late morning or afternoon, and is perfect with milk (or without it) and sweetened to taste. English Breakfast is known for being consumed during a traditional hearty English breakfast. English breakfast is a blend of black tea that is usually described as robust to be combined with milk and sugar for the first morning meal. Earl Gray tea has a very distinctive bergamot flavor that has been present from ancient times to this day. In our market there are also black teas with the aroma of forest fruits or vanilla which have distinctive flavors precisely because of their aroma. Black teas increase energy and are good for digestion.

4) Premium teas (Sencha tea, English Breakfast premium tea, Earl Grey premium)

Astonish your senses and awaken your taste buds with premium loose leaf teas made from the finest ingredients. These teas and ingredients are carefully sourced from around the world, from China through India and Japan to southern Italy. The beautiful gift boxes contain a bag with gold foil to keep the pyramid tea bags fresh. Pyramid tea bags are designed to allow for even brewing. This tea is made for socializing :)
